Day1376

Meaning: It refers to the disciplinary punishment where a child is restricted from leaving home or a specific area by their parent.

My Original Sentence

I’ve thought if I ground myself in my house, I’ll spend more time on my English journey.
But I can’t take enough sunlight and I can’t exercise well enough, which is kind of unhealthy.
Plus, basically I have to go out for some reason.
I ended up avoiding that, because it’s a tall order.

Room for improvement

ground myself

“ground myself” doesn’t naturally mean “confine myself to my house.”
If you say “I grounded myself”, native speakers will usually think you mean something like “I centered myself / calmed myself down.”
→ For example: “I took a deep breath to ground myself before the big presentation.”

“Ground someone” (in the sense of punishment) — “My mom grounded me, so I can’t go out.”
→ means “forbid someone (a child) from leaving the house.”

If you want to say “I didn’t allow myself to go out,” these are natural ways:

“I kept myself at home.”
“I shut myself in.”
“I stayed cooped up at home.”

“Coop up” means to keep someone (or yourself) in a small or closed space for a long time — usually in a way that feels uncomfortable.

a tall order

“I ended up avoiding that, because it’s a tall order.” is clear meaning.
“A tall order” = “a very difficult request or task someone asks you to do.”

So it usually fits when someone expects something from you.
Examples:
“Asking me to run a marathon tomorrow is a tall order.”
“Finishing this project in one day is a tall order.”

In your sentence, no one is asking you — it’s your own action. So it feels slightly off.

Natural expression, but doesn’t quite fit your self-directed situation. Works better if someone expects something from you.

“I ended up avoiding that, since it felt like too tall an order for me.”
元のa tall orderの形にしたかったので“I ended up avoiding that, since it felt like a tall order for me.”

“Plus, basically I have to go out for some reason.”

Natural enough but slightly clunky rhythm.
“Plus, I basically have to go out for one reason or another.”
→ This version sounds smoother and more natural in spoken English.

Edited Version

I’ve thought if I stay cooped up at home, I’d spend more time on my English journey.
But I can’t take enough sunlight and I can’t exercise well enough, which is kind of unhealthy.
Plus, I basically have to go out for one reason or another.
I ended up avoiding that, since it felt like a tall order for me.
